>>>  Topical Treatments in Dentistry

Written by: Martine BONNAURE-MALLET, Hélène CHARDIN,
Jean-François NGUYEN, Charles-Daniel ARRETO, Philippe ROCHER,
Agnès BLOCH ZUPAN

There are so many topical treatments available today for oral health care that health professionals and consumers alike are lost for choice. The best known are of course dentifrices; but along with tooth pastes and gels, other products such as mouthwashes, sprays, rinses, and chewing-gum are being increasingly used.
These topical treatments differ not only in their dosage form but also in their action, which depends on the active ingredient they contain. This brochure lists the various topical treatments available for oral health care in categories based on the properties of their active ingredients. A whole chapter is also dedicated to excipients, the vehicles that give topical treatments their specific consistency. Another chapter provides definitions of the different dosage forms. The last part of the Dossier explains the rules and regulations, certification and standardisation procedures that apply to these products. The main topical treatments are presented in alphabetical order along with their properties in a non-exhaustive list in the annexe.

 >>>   OSA and Snoring: from the Detection of the Syndrome to the Placement of a Mandibular Advancement Device

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is defined as the repetitive occurrence during sleep of the total or partial obstruction of the upper airway, leading to apnoea or hypopnoea.
Because of its negative effects on vigilance during waking hours, OSA significantly impacts the quality of life of those who suffer from the syndrome. Considering the number of patients who see their dentist each year, dentists are at the forefront and play a major role in the detection of OSA.
In collaboration with the sleep specialist who will prescribe the treatment and check its efficacy, the dentist will confirm the prescription and equip the patient with a mandibular advancement device. He/she must therefore be capable of determining how the treatment will best be carried out. Throughout the treatment procedure, the dentist will regularly check not only the device, but also the evolution of the teeth and supporting tissues.

 >>>   Medical Emergencies in the Dental Surgery

Written by: Florian LAURENT, Guy BELLAICHE, Catherine BERTRAND,
Yves LAPOSTOLLE, Philippe LESCLOUS, Louis MAMAN, Philippe ROCHER

Oral health care is a potentially dangerous activity as it often involves invasive procedures such as anaesthetics, incisions, flap surgery, etc. Dentists are healthcare professionals and, as such, must be prepared to manage medical emergencies that may arise in the practice. However, they are not emergency specialists and are not confronted daily to medical emergencies.
In the event of a medical emergency, a dentist is not expected to make a definite diagnosis, but must be capable of recognising warning signs, of ensuring the patient’s safety and of providing immediate first aid care while waiting for the paramedics. The dentist should therefore be capable of identifying, assessing and describing the situation precisely, of reacting quickly and appropriately to the emergency in hand, and of using the equipment and medication necessary for the efficient management of the patient.
This guide aims at preparing the dentist to the management of medical emergencies that may occur in the surgery or in everyday life. Its purpose is not to prepare the dentist to dental emergencies.

>>>   Positive list of Dental Disinfectants - 2009 Edition

Written by: Martine BONNAURE-MALLET, Marie-Louise GOETZ, Marc APAP, Odile BARSOTTI,
Sylvie BOURZEIX DE LAROUZIÈRE, Hélène CHARDIN, Raphaëlle GIRARD, Delphine SEYTRE

Hygiene and asepsis in the dental surgery are one of the dentist's main concerns. The ADF and the SFHH, the French society for hospital hygiene, have once again joined forces to publish the seventh "positive list of disinfectants" drawn up especially for dentists. The products listed, which are assessed by the ADF/SFHH Committee at the request of the laboratories, after invitation by the ADF, meet very specific requirements. They are presented in such a way that practitioners may easily choose the product best suited to a particular use.
The brochure provides explanations on choosing the right disinfectant, understanding the labels and knowing how to use each product.
