The prescription of denture adhesives by oral health care professionals has long been a taboo subject because of its association with the idea of failure. But this line of thought is now totally outworn. The prescription of denture adhesives, designed to enhance denture retention, should meet specific requirements that will guarantee the patient’s comfort and the absence of ill effects on the patient’s oral health. This guide uses a number of epidemiological studies to explore the subject of dental adhesives, their impact on public health, their uses and advantages. The composition and function of each of their constituents are analysed in order to understand how they interact with the various oral structures, and more particularly with the teeth, soft tissues and bone support. The deleterious effects and influence of denture adhesives on the oral microflora of removable denture wearers are described, and rules for correct use and prescription are provided as well as advice to be given to the patients.

Topical Treatments in Dentistry

There are so many topical treatments available today for oral health care that health professionals and consumers alike are lost for choice. The best known are of course dentifrices; but along with tooth pastes and gels, other products such as mouthwashes, sprays, rinses, and chewing-gum are being increasingly used. These topical treatments differ not only in their dosage form but also in their action, which depends on the active ingredient they contain. This brochure lists the various topical treatments available for oral health care in categories based on the properties of their active ingredients. A whole chapter is also dedicated to excipients, the vehicles that give topical treatments their specific consistency. Another chapter provides definitions of the different dosage forms. The last part of the Dossier explains the rules and regulations, certification and standardisation procedures that apply to these products. The main topical treatments are presented in alphabetical order along with their properties in a non-exhaustive list in the annexe.

Hand Protection in the Dental Surgery

Written by: Michel AUBIER, Samuel KLEINFINGER
Under the supervision of Samuel KLEINFINGER and Michel GOLDBERG
Published in 2003

Hands are the commonest source of contamination, causing 70% to 80% of all cross-infections. Handwashing remains the most effictive method of prevention and is the principal means of avoiding nosocomial infections, as – by stopping transient flora from colonising or soiling the hands and by reducing the amount of commensal flora – it helps to lower the number of micro-organisms present, thereby precluding their transmission. The use of gloves, which does not in any way pre-empt handwashing, is also an absolute necessity in many patient-care situations. Its importance is underlined by thesimple fact – to give but just one example – that, in case of accidental needlestick injury, the glove absorbs 30% to 60% of the blood contained in the needle.A great many types of gloves are nowadays available to dentists and their teams. None, however, can be claimed to be 100% risk-proof – none are impenetrable, all modify the commensal and transient flora of the skin, and some may induce dermatoses and allergies more than others. Nevertheless, although gloves do not guarantee full protection, they do provide a good means of prevention – they simply have to be well chosen and properly used to achieve maximum efficiency and minimum discomfort. This booklet offers an overview of the scientific and historic data concerning hands and hand hygiene, gives detailed information on various types of gloves and related skin problems, and provides practitioners with guidelines on how to achieve the highest possible level of hygiene in their dental surgery.

Biological tests designed to provide the etiologic diagnosis of oral diseases and/or to screen individuals at high risk of caries or periodontal disease have been available on the market for a number of years. Can these tests truly improve our ability to identify individuals at risk, to prevent the onset of the disease in these individuals or to check its progress? And can they really help us establish a diagnosis and make our treatment decisions?
The tests available, their targets and indications, are numerous and varied. This guide explores the usefulness of bioassays, and more specifically of microbiological tests, in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the commonest oral diseases. After describing the targets currently used by laboratories and the basic characteristics of oral diseases, it discusses the indications of these tests and presents the ones available on the French market.
